The Grey Man, stories in paint

The book brings together the paintings and linked short stories of Huwco Jones where the traditional roles are flipped: here, the words illustrate the art. This reversal offers a rare, guided tour through the artist’s creative mind. Within its pages, the scenery so familiar to Huwco becomes inhabited by extraordinary characters drawn from his unshackled imagination.

The first painting with the complete first story is shown here on the website. A selection of paintings with short excerpts are shown subsequently.

“In the beginning” Acrylic on canvas. 100x100 cm. 2025

In the beginning.

The Painter had walked the path rhrough this landscape so many times. He had witnessed its ever-changing mood through the seasons and through his own tribulations. Although he had painted these scenes so often, each visit brought a fresh revelation; a visual challenge that demanded a new way of expressing what he saw. He took genuine joy in the process, sensing that each attempt to master a new technique brought him closer to a personal language of expression.

But a day came when he could no longer venture out with his paints to seek new vistas. Confined to the stillness of his studio, the paintings from years past that surrounded him rekindled his imagination and prompted him to revisist themes and memories.

He had once drawn heavily from the human form; what if he were to breathe new life into those figures again? What if he populated his creations with other souls? These characters could share new experiences and lead him toward adventures within the paintings themselves, journeys he could never take in the reality of everyday life. In this realization, he felt a sudden liberation ftrom his physicsl walls. He dipped his brush, ready to start the adventure.

“Right,” he whispered to his empty canvas, “let’s have some fun.”

“The Grey Man, late Autumn” Waterclour. 50x50 cm. 2026

……As he crossed the threshold into the trees, he felt an uneasyness. It wasn’t a fear of predators, it was that the woods were “wrong”…

… I’m in a painting”, he realised, the thought landing with the weight of a stone….
